Learning App's

Hi

My business are currently looking at upgrading our mobile technology.  My manager has put forward a wish list, and included App's to support learning.  He is not the most technologically minded person, and when asked "which app's?" he has come to me.

So......what app's do you use or would recommend to support learning?  A very vague question I know, but we are a real point of change in the business and we have an opportunity to get our technology closer to the 21st Century.

Thanks

Rosie

  • Hi Rosie,

I just looked at Perry Timms blog that Mike linked to and found it very interesting. I use a number of the listed items but not as "apps" as far as I am aware.

I'm technologically inept and not sure of how "an app" is better than accessing the same tools in other ways - is it because the app provides a shortcut? Or is it because apps can be used on mobile phones?

It's great that your business are considering upgrading their mobile technology - I presume you have lots of staff out and about for whom the mobile apps will be useful.

Hope you find all the info you are looking for to support the business. Good luck with your research. When you discover the benefits I'd be very interested in hearing about them, so make sure you update us! Many thanks,  Alison :)

  • Great to hear Rosie....are we going down the Android route or the Apple route? Is it phones or tablets or both?

Reason I ask is that apps will vary depending on the Operating System. I imagine it will be the Apple route as they seem to be preferred to Android for a whole host of reasons but 'corporate friendly' seems to be #1.

The other question is to support what learning?

Are you talking about supporting the L&D/HR team specifically or the wider business with you making recommendations on what apps can support learning generally or things specific to the any programmes you deliver and how you can support this afterwards.

Mobile is massive and can support productivity and on the job stuff through apps like Evernote but it depends on what access your mobile owners will be given. Things like the TED app are again great learning tools but again what are they to be used for.

This is an interesting post that shows some apps that have been designed for Learning Designers specifically

Richard Pedley was also talking about mobile a little while ago, might be worth making contact to see how he progressed.

Perry Timms also posted a blog at the start of the year looking at what apps he'll be using in 2014

Hope this gets you started :)

    • Hi Mike

Thanks for your input.  In response to your questions; I believe we are going down the android route (more affordable.)

To support what learning? - Good question!  My thoughts are to support the wider business in general.  Evernote is on my list, along with YouTube.  I would love to see something that has hints and tips in using Microsoft packages.  Our IS training team looks after this side of things but their primary focus is our internal systems and there is a real gap in knowing the basics of PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, etc.

The technical side of our L&D team are starting to embrace video clips, so something that could support individuals making these.

The core of my portfolio is personal development and management/leadership skills, so any apps that could help individuals in any of these would be great, but I know that might be a step too far.

Thanks for the links, I'll take a look!

      Rosie
