Starting out in L&D

Hi All

I am changing career and entering into the world of HRD.  I am currenly signed up to HRD Level 5 and would welcome any advice that you can offer to assist me in my new path.

What are hot topics of interest?  What organisations strongly support HRD?  As HRD professionals what is your best advice for developing in the field?

All posts welcome, Thank you

Rachel :)

  • I happen to take that decision today. I don't have an HR background. How do I proceed in terms of job search. Is a CIPD certification a must have before I am considered eligible?
    • Hi Funmi, I have found that working towards my CIPD has certainly opened doors for me and made me more credible when applying for roles.  It has not been a problem that I have not completed my course yet but seen as a positive step in the profession.  I have also attended some local CIPD events which have been very informative and helpful.  This has also given me the opportunity to do some networking that Liz mentioned in her reply to me.  I would try and establish what it is that you want to do specifically as I have found that there are so many areas of specialism and to solely deliver training limits me to using all my skills and experience.  Good Luck!

  • Hi Rachel, deciding upon a career in development is a great choice.  Its hugely rewarding with lots of opportunity to help individuals and organisations develop and achieve their goal.  In 20 years of being in the profession, I can honestly say I've never had a boring day.

Hot topics currently seem to be around putting development frameworks, management development programmes and talent management support back in place.  Organisations are seeing this as an opportunity to update their previous approach following the strip-out of development functions during the recession.

Pleased to advise that most business support development, either operationally focussed L&D for the smaller sized orgs, or most strategic HRD for the larger ones.  Some sectors can be quite insular and hard to get into - retail and finance are particularly difficult.

In terms of where to start, presuming you're CIPD registered, I'd try your local branch for a spot of networking, useful events (hopefully!) and some also offer mentoring support for HR and HRD professional

    Best of luck

    Liz

  • Thanks for your replies, I have signed up to a local CIPD event to develop my knowldege and facilitation skills and will take your advice on board regarding reading as many articles, discussions, blogs etc that I can.  This week I have started a new role in L&D and am looking forward to the challenges that it holds.

    Thank you

    Rachel

    • My advice Rachel is get involved.

Get involved in and attend branch events, unconferences, exhibitions (free) as as well as try to get to conferences.

Get on Twitter, join LinkedIn groups, Join G+ communities. Read blogs (you can find out more about blogs here)

Read more blogs.....in fact start your own. We have a rich and vibrant L&D community across many social media channels and through communities such as this. Your joining such an exciting and varied profession that could open many different career paths. I always think you get out what you put in so if you are enthusiastic and willing to learn there will be so many people out there to help and support and share what they know.

Or you can keep your head down and stay in your organisation and only learn from those physically around you.

Here is a blog I wrote after attending an unconference a couple of years ago and it changed my thinking around L&D and inspired me, motivated me and helped me realise the potential we have to make a difference *hint* - it's not just about delivery training.

Get involved, get active, get reading, sharing and contributing and you'll love the role and the profession even more.Who knows where it will lead :)

  • Hi Rachel,

I guess how much is new will depend upon what your previous career was.

You will find the HRD course will introduce you to hot topics of interest and I would second what John has said below.

I have found my local CIPD branch events very interesting and informative. I spend a lot of time reading articles on the internet and have a twitter account. The DPG website holds lots of interesting discussions, blogs and links as well.

Good luck with your new career.

    Alison

  • Hi Rachel,

I went through this recently and the best advice I could give is open yourself up to as many experiences as possible, (I assume you will have joined the CIPD)  look up the local CIPD branch and go meet people.

Search for and read articles of interest  on the internet or borrow books !

Create a twitter account and follow a few HRD orientated people or groups.

    Oh and have fun !!

    John

CIPD Branch Events

Did you know your local CIPD branch will put on relevant events that are free to CIPD members.

Take a look for your local branch here and what events are happening. Remember attending these events are great CPD evidence.
