Under 3 weeks remaining to submit your entries!

Those of you making applications for the TJ Awards 2014 please note that the deadline is under three weeks away and your application needs to be with us by 5pm on Friday 4th July.

If your familiar with the awards already and intend to apply again please remember there are some changes to the awards this year so take time to read the guide to entering carefully before starting your application. It should be emphasised that it is important to do the following when applying:

  • Read our full T&Cs, guide to entering and the judging criteria thoroughly
  • Use the correct form for the category and a separate application for each entry
  • Make sure you demonstrate that your business and learning objectives have been met.

All the guides, criteria and application forms can be download at www.trainingjournal.com/awards where you can find answers to most awards related questions but if not the TJ Awards’ team are on hand at awards@trainingjournal.com or on 01353 865340 so please don’t hesitate to contact us if there is something you need clarifying.

The winners of gold, silver and bronze awards in the 16 categories will be announced at a fabulous Gala Dinner held in The Porter Tun room at the Brewery on Wednesday 26th November. It’s a fabulous night of celebration and now one of the biggest of its kind in the industry. Our thanks must go to sponsors: the APM-Group, Belbin UK, the Charity Learning Consortium and of course our headline sponsor DPG (that's us whoop whoop)

A bit of Japanese culture for you. This is a picture (courtesy of the internet) of a daruma doll. We took our daruma doll with us to our interview as they bring you luck.

We had one eye filled in, which you do when you start a project. The daruma doll watches you then, to remind you to continue working on the project. When the project is complete you can fill in the second eye!

  • We had our panel interview in London this morning. My boss and the shift manager that accompanied me were brilliant, really supportive. Trouble is I spent the whole return trip thinking about it and thinking " i wish i'd mentioned such and such ( post training evaluation project that we're piloting this year) i should have mentioned such and such ( walking the lines talking to staff about their training, which i do as much as i can, and also auditing)."
Oh hindsight is such a wonderful thing. I even took things in my bag to show the judges, to aid the discussion, and didn't even get them out. ( feedback sheets and certificates. )
i also forgot to ask when we find out what the results are! Haha! Oh dear. Never mind. All i can do is wait now!
  • Got a meeting with my boss this afternoon, to discuss our presentation.

Our interview is next Tuesday morning and we have a panel of two esteemed judges. I have seen the list of 6 other companies that have been shortlisted in our category. Ooh it's very exciting!

  • This is great news Alison congratulations and well done. Getting short listed alone is a great achievement as the TJ's are one of if not THE premier L&D awards in the UK. Keep us posted on how you go.

  • Yes, SLT are happy to carry on supporting our application, so it's all systems go! Yay!

  • Today I had an e mail letting me know that our submission has been shortlisted, which means we are through to the next round of judging which involves an interview in London.

We are recommended to have 3 staff attend the interview (this is the maximum number) comprising of myself and additionally an SLT member and a training course delegate, each to put things from their perspective. I need to hunt now to find out the expectations regarding the interview stage but I think we have to make a short presentation then answer any questions from the panel. (no idea how many will be on the panel or which judges wil judge our category.) I only entered into one category which was the "Best operational programme" category.

I have just had a quick chat with Mike and now I'm feeling quite proud to have been short listed.

I hope the business will support it through the next stage. (I let the SLT know as soon as I knew.) I'll let you know if they do :)

  • Yay - 1,492 words. I'm off home now :)

    • Well done Alison, I know how hard these award submissions can be to write within the word count so to get the word count down so much is great news. Hope you relaxed last night and good luck!

      Mike

      • I entered my application. The instructions weren't very clear and out of two possible approaches I chose the wrong one.

The instructions say please describe your initiative using a maximum of 1500 words. Then, after a couple of lines describing what they are looking for conceptually, they say that your description should answer all of the questions. This instruction is followed by a table listing 10 questions and the marks associated with each.

I wasn't certain how to draft the description, but as it said using a maximum of 1500 words I assumed it was in a spiel.

After I submitted my entry I decided to call the awards team to check, and they told me I should have answered the questions in the table using less than 1500 words, which in my mind isn't quite the same thing at all!

Not sure whether I'll get time to resubmit now. Never mind :)

        • Hi would speak to them again and explain the situation. You have worked hard on this so don't give up. You submitted before the deadline but it needs a little tweaking in terms of layout but the content is already there.

Also feedback that the submission process isn't the clearest.
