Booking holidays - how much notice is fair?

Hi everyone,

I'd really appreciate some help with this please - I'm a newish HR manager & am putting some policies into place -

With 24 FTE we're small, so any employee absence can make an impact on our project delivery times & therefore need to factor this in when employees request leave, but of course it must be fair for everyone :)

I'd love to know what other smaller companies do...

here are my thoughts -

- to book a week or more (my suggestion = a month, or as much notice as possible)

- to book a day (my suggestion = double the amount of time requested must be the notice given)

Thanks so much in advance!

Laura

  • Hi Laura

I would go with what you have above.

4 weeks for anything more than a week, but less than that to be at least 1 day's notice, and double for more days!

  • Hi Laura

Many of my clients are owner managed businesses with less than 70 employees and generally yes the notice requirements for holiday do exceed the default notice period fur the working time regulations which is twice the amount of leave which is being requested.

Interestingly I was looking at a contract today where the notice period for a weeks' leave was one month so that is not uncommon in smaller businesses and many of my clients also designate periods when leave cannot be taken.

I guess my only observation is the one day absences obviously have less impact if you are only asking for two days notice I would probably extend this out to a week.

At the end of the day it's what ever the managers can manage with.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards
