Dear HR Colleagues
I am new to the world of HR and a question was put to me the other day to which I just don’t know the answer, so I am hoping someone can help.
Is a Manager allowed to cancel an employee’s leave after they have approved it? The person in question was told that if his project work is not complete by the time he is due to go on leave, they will cancel his leave that he has booked off.
Could someone shed some light on this? Is there a policy around this or does it just come down to the company policy?

Hi Shine
Thanks for posting, an interesting question. Generally speaking yes employers can cancel annual leave but they are required to give twice the amount of leave which has been requested.
Interestingly the post you have shared though appears that the cancellation of the holiday is a punitive measure i.e. a punishment because the employee has not delivered in terms of his job role. So I would be uncomfortable with this as an approach. If it was because there was a huge order which had come in suddenly and needed to be shipped fine but the example you give I would not advise the leave is cancelled, as there has been no procedure in terms of the punitive measure. What does everyone else think of this?
There is some good guidance in the ACAS booklet on holidays and holiday pay also if you are keen to know more which can be found here:

I hope this helps.
