CIPD Level 5 - HELP!

Hi everyone, I am currently trying to find a suitable CIPD level 5 course, I have come across DPG and would love to start in April however I have some concerns about the distant learning element...
  1. How did you all find it?
  2. Were you able to get help from other students and/or tutors?
  3. Was the support easy to get hold of or did it seem a bit limited?
  4. Did you pass easily or struggle with any of the workload.
  5. What was the structure of the assignments like?
  6. Was the tutor useful and resourceful?
  7. Were you able to schedule one on one time?
  8. Were there any online video classes? Or podcasts?
  9. Is there an online help forum for anyone else studying for the CIPD?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thank you.
Helen

  • Hello Helen,

I completed my level 5 at the end of last year and also had the same concerns. I found the balance of attendance and the distance learning required manageable. There is a need to keep on top of the workload, but as you discuss the learning in the sessions there is not much you can do but get on with it. I have tried full distance learning in the past and failed miserably...

We worked together throughout and had smaller group activities also which helped immensely.

If you read the modules and follow what it asks it is very easy to follow.

    We had a great tutor.

We all had an opportunity to contact the tutor or DPG at anytime and had a response relatively quickly.

I found the DPG great in the community and still do now even after I completed the course.

There are podcasts during the course, but there are a wealth of podcasts you can source in addition to what is stated.

I passed without any referrals on assignments but a number of individuals had referrals but the information was clear enough to know what needed rectifying or adding.

I hope this helps it was enjoyable and very worthwhile.

    • Hi Ian

Thank you for your honesty. I haven't studied for ages so this is going to be a challenge but I am hoping along with the workshops and extra support I will hopefully pass. In regards to the referrals, did the individuals still pass in the time slot? Or did it take them a little longer? Also, with assignments, when roughly were they due after each workshop?

I am sure I will be in touch whilst studying to ask for some advice!

      Thank you again!

      Helen

      • Hi Helen,

As far as i am aware all individuals passed in the allocated time slot without any problems as the feedback is clearly structured. The Online modules are great, don't get carried away with doing too much additional research as some modules are interesting and this is easily done.

You have a far while to submit assignments and you have all the dates from the beginning of the course so nothing scary will jump out at you. A lot of the preparation work will be completed at the workshops as they are designed to support them and you are assessed throughout the course at the workshops. They are a great way to reflect on how you are progressing and how you manage the workplace.

Whilst studying I moved, had a 3 week holiday, raised a grievance, resigned and found a new job... You just need confidence in your abilities.

The fact that you are asking questions shows your commitment to succeed and therefore I do not foresee you having any problems.

  • Hi Helen,

I also had the above questions as I will be starting my level 5 HRM on 9th April.  After viewing the online community and various groups an support links I am excited to start.  Having been out of study for a long time it can be daunting to start distance learning and there are so many unknowns.  I feel confident I will do well though, and the feedback I received from work colleagues on DPG is really good.

Hope this helps and you will start and enjoy your course. Good luck!

    • Hi Yanikee

That's fantastic to hear which group are you joining?

      All the best

      Sarah
    • Hi Yanikee

I am glad to hear you were in the same boat. I have now finally come to the decision to study with DPG, I start on 14th April 2016. I haven't studied distance before so it will be different! I am looking forward to starting.

      Good luck to you!

      Helen

      • Yay! Welcome aboard Helen !!

All the best with your studies

        Sarah
        • Thank you so much Sarah. I cannot wait to get started!

          Helen

      • This is great news Helen/Yanikee - so pleased the community had a hand in giving you the confidence to study with us. As Sarah has already stated we try and provide as much support as possible in a variety of ways and provide a rich learning experience. I wish you both every success on the programme and hope to see you contributing and asking questions in our forums - they are a great source of learning and CPD.
