CIPD report on the news this morning

Did anyone else here the CIPD mentioned this morning on the news? They have just published a report which finds that the majority of UK university graduates are working in jobs that do not require a degree, with over-qualification at "saturation point", you can read the news coverage here:

You can access the report here:

  • Thanks for highlighting this, Sarah. I vaguely heard the headline this morning but hadn't read the details until now. I think this should be a wake up call and responsibility taken by schools, careers advisers, government, etc. in pushing so many young people to university. I previously worked in the legal sector in graduate recruitment and saw the masses of law students coming through, a large number of whom would never get a training contract, at least not immediately or without an exceptional amount of persistence, because the number of vacancies to meet the need of the number of students just didn't exist. Very sad that many legal graduates end up in paralegal jobs, the requirements for which have now risen to having a degree and even an LPC (legal practice course). The situation is seriously skewed when job requirements are being increased without any changes to the job spec itself. I hope something changes soon :-/
    • Hi Sally

Yes I think you are right, I have been talking to a number of students who have recently received their A Levels and are deciding what to do next.  Interestingly I find that parents are not really aware of the alternatives available to students nowadays and the CIPD yesterday also published a really useful report - Great Expectations - A Career Guide for Parents.

I attach a copy for those interested:

Also I totally agree with you that I am increasingly hearing that parents are actively advising their children not to follow them into Law - so it is interesting that you make that point.  I hope something changes soon too, especially when you consider the levels of debt that students now leave University with (on average around £44,000).

      Regards
