Employees needing glasses as per DSE assessment

Hi All,We have been asked by an employee if we would contribute towards glasses that she now needs due to experiencing migraines. She has never needed glasses before.Can you advise if:1. - Your organisation contributes towards the glasses and if so how much?2. - If your company does contribute are there restrictions such as price of frames of lense prescription?Thanks,Jacqui

    We issue all employees an EdenRed EyeCare Voucher which enables them to get their sight tested. You can also get spectacle vouchers which are to the value of £55 I believe. I work for an online retailer and we accept them as well as the high street. Alternatively, it might be worth looking online and setting up a scheme where employees can order from an online retailer up to a certain value? Drop me a message if I can help.

  • Hi Jacqui, by law you have to provide an eye test and the cover the cost of a basic pair of single vision glasses if required specifically for DSE work.  The following HSE guidance is a good place to start:  http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg36.pdf ;

    You can buy vouchers from most of the High Street opticians to give to employees that will cover the cost of the test and a pair of single vision glasses at a substantial saving against normal costs.

    • That's great Peter - if the employee wanted to buy a designer pair of frames would you then ask them to give you a price of the basic frames and then they pay the balance?

      • Exactly.  With the voucher schemes the opticians do all the work you just give the employee a voucher for the test and basic glasses if required, if the person wants anything above this they pay the optician directly.  Not sure if this applies but you can also get vouchers for company car drivers as this will help show you have excersised your Duty of Care and you should also include warehouse staff who use hand held computers or other devices with screens when you do your DSE assessments.

  • Hi Jacqui,

     

    The company I work for contributes. We ask employees that qualify via DSE to claim the costs back via expenses. We pay for the full cost of the eye test and 1 pair of glasses from the basics range. If the employee wishes to have designer range, they only claim the cost of the basic range.
