Help needed

I am doing my MA in Human Resource Management and I wonder is there is any HR professional over there who could give me some ideas on what  topic to choose for my dissertation. I am interested in change management, organisational ethnic diversity and e-recruitment.

Thank you for your help.

  • Dear all

Thank you very much for your ideas.  It is taking me too long to choose the topic but I believe that I am going for a research on e-recruitment focus on equality and diversity. At the moment, I am reading through existing literature.

  • Hi Edel

At the risk of sounding like everyone one else, it really does need to be something that you're interested in.  As Sarah says, you'll be spending a lot of time doing this!

For my MA I focused on a work issue at the company I worked - it was on the impact of the MD on the formalisation of HR.  It was a company that had gone through a great deal of change and the MD had built the company from scratch, so the success of policies, initiatives etc.. was heavily influenced by his actions and behaviours. Being able to carry out research in the organisation and have the insight I did, was invaluable when it came to critically analysing the data.

Best of luck - it's a hard choice I know!

  • Hi Edel

Great topic and it is always a difficult one as you will be spending a lot of time on this!   I agree with everything which has already been posted so for.

As many will know from experience it has to be something which you have a genuine interest in, for both my dissertations I also tried to link mine to solving a business issue for the Company which I worked for, this way I could add value to the business as they were supporting me with my studies.  So if that's something you can achieve it's a win win.

I also linked it to something current so at the time or my MSc I looked at the introduction of age discrimination in the UK and compared it to the experiences of the US, where AD had been in place for 40 years, for my CIPD I based it on introducing Flexible Working in a company with a presentism culture and the impact on the psychological contact.  My primary research focussed on SME opinions of the impending legislation and employee opinions of flexible working respectively.

With hindsight I had a genuine interest in the topic and the Flexible Working work formed the basis of our application for a Times Top 100 company at a later stage, so it was definitely worthwhile doing.

Let us know what you decide! and good luck.

    All the best

    Sarah

  • Great question Edel. I'm going to do that old answering a question with a question thing! There is a reason. I'm thinking that perhaps, you could start with a question as your dissertation topic. I love the idea of this approach of setting out to answer a question. Your dissertation then becomes your story of discovery. If it's a question you're passionately curious in discovering some answers and new thinking around in your professional life, it also makes great rewarding CPD along the way too. So thinking about Justina's great questions to consider, what would be your question be to kick off your topic?

  • Hi Edel,

Reflect on the topics you previously mentioned and evaluate every topic area by criteria:

Are you passionate about the topic?

Are you well grounded in the scholarly literature?

Is your topic manageable, given your time frame, resources, and availability of data sources?

Is your topic significant in practical or theoretical terms?

Is your topic original? (Has it been done before?)

Hope it will help you to make a decision. And good luck with your dissertation!

  • Hi Edel,

Good selection of topics, difficult to chose from!. However, my instinct is leading me towards suggesting eRecruitment. My ideas on that are surrounding how latest readings are suggesting Technology is a huge consideration in how HR professionals move on in 2016. With technology being one of the biggest drivers of globalisation, and the fact many organisations are now widening their recruitment net to overseas, the two elements could be drawn together possibly? Just a thought.
