Hi all,
I have just uploaded and advertised 4 new vacancies for my organisation. At the request of the Director of the project concerned, the posts are being advertised for just over two weeks, before the deadline for applications. That doesn't seem to be very long, and certainly previous vacancies tended to be open for about a month.
The Director does have a point however, in saying that he wants to be able to interview the best of the applicants - and not the ones that are left after the top ones have perhaps been offered employment whilst waiting for an interview with us.
This begs the question then.. What is the optimum time period for a job vacancy to be advertised?
It would be useful to hear what you use as a standard.
Tks
Steve

We have a standard 2 week advertising period for all vacancies.
In my experience anything longer than this exposes you to the risk of losing good candidates due the process being dragged out.
Hope that helps.

Thanks Steve,
Seems I might have to re-write our process, and look at 2 weeks being the optimum after all.
Really useful to have this feedback.
Cheers

Hi Steve
At my company the standard we use is - we advertise internally for a minimum of 7 days and externally for 2 weeks. I don't think we've ever left it open for longer that 2 weeks, although a couple of times we've had to readvertise for a further two weeks as no-one suitable applied.
I suppose we have to consider the length of the recruitment process as a whole - after the closing date you have to shortlist, send our invite to interview letters/rejections, book rooms etc, which all takes time to do. However, you want to give candidates enough time to submit a good application form. It's tough. Also a consideration is how urgently do you need to fill the post? If it's critical to the business then advertise for a shorter period of time?

Thanks Jill,
That's useful to know. I felt that 2 weeks was quite a short timeframe, but maybe not then.
Cheers
