Hi All
Looking for guidance and what you all do with regards to company sick pay.We pay 15 days full pay and 15 half pay over a rolling 12 month period however the company sick pay is discretionary.
I have just had an employee ask what is the rolling 12 months for sick as he was off sick last Feb with broken ankle (sports related) and he said should it not be from Feb to Feb then revert back to 15 days full pay from March. I said he then had more sick in November 2013 so the 12 months keeps moving, He then had more sick at end of Feb 2014 and has just had 2 weeks off for an operation on the ankle he was off for last year. We didn't pay for this last lot so thats why he asked the question but it has made me doubt what I said is correct.
If anyone can help, hope it makes sense what I am saying.
Thanks
Rachel

Hi Rachel
It makes sense, I just think your employee has misunderstood what a rolling year means. His absence from February will have 'fallen off' and not be counted but a rolling year looks over the last 12 months so from June 26th 2013 to today. His absence in November and February 2014 still counts.
The only way his sick pay will 'reset' is if he does not have any further absence between now and June 26th 2015.
I hope the above makes sense but it does show that it can be quite complicated to explain and perhaps this is not widely understood in your organisation. Do you think you could perhaps do something to educate your employees and make this a little more clear?
Hope this helps
Laura
Thanks Laura, yes it did, reading your response has made it clearer in my head! I am revising polices at the moment so think I'll add in an example to help!
Thank you
