Hi,
I was just wondering how other businesses are approaching the shared parental leave changes that happen in April?
Do you pay an enhanced rate to those on maternity leave - if so - are you going to apply this to the other parent too?
Would love to hear views from other sectors!
Thanks
Jo

Crikey we were talking about this a long time ago and now we have the first case law ruling on Shared Parental Leave

Thanks all for replying to me.
We do pay enhanced Maternity pay and will be offering that for the father/ partner too. Having gone through the legislation and now our new policy in detail - it is really quite complex!! It will be interesting if anyone applies for SPL and also a big learning curve!
Hi Jo
I have spoken with a couple of people in HR both large corporates. Both have enhanced maternity pay. Interestingly one is applying the same enhanced rates for SPL and one is not. Which I was very surprised at. How is your company planning to approach it?

HI Jo
We have only had 1 request for shared parental leave. Once explained that this didn't mean they would be paid as per the mother ie. couldn't get it for the first few weeks they changed their mind. I don't think even the individuals understand what they are entitled to and once they know they are not as eager to take it - even the 2 weeks SPP! I'm sure this will change but we have no intention in enhancing anyone's pay due to this change.
If you were going to pay an enhanced rate that you would probably have to offer that to the father also or you could be seen to be discriminating.
cheers Nic
Hi Jo
Interesting question. I work mainly with SMEs and owner managed businesses and generally they only pay SMP so for SPL it will be the same. I have some friends who work in larger corporate firms (energy industry) who I know do have enhanced maternity pay so I will ask them and get back to you.

Hi Jo,
The CIPD have just shared this article which might be of interest
Does anyone understand Shared Parental Leave
Hi Jo,
Thanks for your post. We're just starting to look at this within my organisation...
I work in the private sector, in an insurance company. We currently offer a slightly enhanced maternity pay package. My personal opinion is that we should use the same approach for the other parent, but as I say, we're just starting to look at this so I can't offer any concrete advice just yet. Perhaps we can keep in touch on this and share ideas as we each develop our own policies?
Cheers,
Katrina
Hi Jo,
As a bloke with 15 yr and 7 yr old boys I don't think I'll benefit from the shared parental leave now but hey you never know. I would have loved to be able to spend more time at home in the very early years. I took the maximum 2 weeks allowed but I think trying to sort the logistics out of how we shared the leave would be difficult - possible of course but I'm sure many couples would face a similar challenge. It's going to be interesting to see how businesses and families make this work for them.
There were a couple of posts linked to this subject that might be useful to refer to.
Shared Parental Leave - Time it happened or waste of time?
Career or Mum - it shouldn't be a choice
What are your thoughts on the law? How is your business approaching this in terms of putting a policy in place?
