We currently have an expenses policy whereby anybody in receipt of car allowance cannot claim for train travel except when travelling into London. This is causing some issues because after working out the costs and downtime there is hardly any difference overall and the loss of work from driving compared to working on a train is the employee argument.
I am looking to find out what your company does - do you allow train travel for car allowance/company car users? Do you restrict the use of trains?

Our company pays for travel as long as we have proof of purchase, and the journey must not be to your dedicated location—i.e. needing to travel to your base office.
Regarding driving, we pay 43p per mile after the usual work commute by car.

Great post, the policy where I used to work used to say that the employee has to opt for the cheapest option. But that said it was mainly ignored once you counted in the time waiting for public transport I am sure the employee could argue in terms of indirect costs that train or car was cheaper.
I am a big fan of working on the train, it has so many additional benefits it can be less stressful than driving, there are no parking issues and from a work life balance perspective you can get so much work done on the training.
I even know one Company where they pay for everyone to travel first class so they are guaranteed a table to work on!
