Hi everyone,I'm reviewing my firm's study leave policy for when an employee makes a successful 'further education' application to do a course that we will sponsor. What Is the recommended minimum/ maximum amount of days to offer? Are there resources where I can find answers to this? Thanks,Kenny

  • Hi Kehinde, we offer all staff undertaking formal study upto 3 days per annum of paid study leave. Alongside this, we offer sponsorship to our employees for courses relevant to their roles. I hope that helps.Liz

  • Hi Kenny

I've just had a quick look online and there are lots of study leave policies online and it seems to be contextual on the sector and organisation.  Although even some NHS organisations were stating study leave was at the manager's discretion.  When I worked in an Accountancy practice employees were allocated one day's paid study leave for each examination which they sat.  Which came in very useful when I did my Level 7 :-)

    I hope this helps

  • Hi Kenny.

As Jenny recommends, at my old company we also allowed five days per year for study leave, though this included any exams people were taking so perhaps a little more strict. More often than not, the line manager would agree a flexible working day around exams so individuals could use those five days for full study in prep for exams etc. I've also experienced the opposite of what Jenny has suggested - very inconsistent support for study, with some colleagues offered far longer leave than others, in addition to varying financial support - key thing is to keep it consistent and that the line managers are clear on the policy to ensure a fair offer
  • Hi Kenny, as far as I am aware study leave is business discretionary and there is no legal minimum requirement . The key is to remain consistent with all employees studying for professional qualifications. My employer offer 5 days discretionary study leave to employees in a 12 month period, it has to work for the business and is given at a time where the business can allow for it. I hope this helps. Jenny.
