    This would be a great development for employees, but may affect the budgets of SME's. If organisations have many employees that work part time on only a few hours, the company will bear the burden of paying SSP as this is one of the few statutory payments they can't reclaim any of from the government.

    Where I work, we have hundreds of cleaners that work between 3 - 6 hours per week, so never meet the threshold for SSP. They are instead sent a SSP1 form if they are still absent on day four (after the waiting days). I work for an international company, so they would be able to absorb the cost. However, I would imagine that they will look at these type of roles and may contract that work out rather than be liable for the additional costs. Let's see what happens.
