So it was a day of HR news today, firstly the sad news that HSBC are making 8000 job cuts across its UK business (and a total of 25 000 across its global operations).
Read below the response from one of the UNITE national officers. Is a reduction of this size really achievable through voluntary means and natural attrition?

The plan, likely to come into force in 2017 and the first in the UK, has already divided opinion among health and medical groups, including some anti-smoking campaigners.

How have you approached the use of e-cigarettes in your workplace?
All the best

Hi Sarah,
Thank you for this post. The news of HSBC is very sad indeed.
In regards to the e-cigarettes, we haven't really had to make a specific approach about it. The smokers that we have who have converted to this popular alternative, have automatically gone outside to use their e-cigarettes. Nobody has had to tell them to do so.
However, if it became an issue that we had to address this, I would most definitely suggest that as for cigarette smokers, those who smoke e-cigarettes are asked to go outside as well. I feel this is out of respect for colleagues, it takes away the point of banning smoking in public places (even though its not actual smoke, but the same behaviour is displayed) and it provides grounds for debate that is not justifiable.
